Our Cubs were very lucky recently and they had a visit from David Smith who is an amazing paralympian Boccia player. Boccia is a precision ball sport a little like bowls or petanque and David is the joint most successful Boccia player in British history. David has won 3 Olympic gold medals (the latest was in Tokyo) as well as a silver and a bronze and numerous European and World medals and was awarded the MBE in 2017. He also has a degree in Aeronautical Engineering and is a keen drummer.
David spent lots of time telling the Cubs all about his career in Boccia and about his life outside of sport and they sat transfixed (as were the leaders) as he told them his amazing life story. David has an incredible electric wheelchair in which he loves to do ‘doughnuts’ which he enjoyed demonstrating to the Cubs and which gave Bagheera plenty of work to do afterwards cleaning up the tyre marks !
The Cubs the spent some time asking David lots of really good and quite searching questions about his sporting life and how he lives his life day to day and he was happy to answer every question.
We are so grateful to David to taking the time to come to the 12th to speak so inspirationally as he did and to Ruth (Raksha) for organising the visit and we wish David all the best for his future.
